Site soft launched during February 2010 as a progression from the 'Drum & Bass Cyprus Facebook Page' with the sole aim of promoting what, in Cyprus at least, can be simply termed as 'alternative electronic dance music' such as Drum & Bass, 'Breaks', Dubstep and Trip-Hop.
If you DJ and/or produce this music and are based in Cyprus then we want to hear from you ! If you want to listen to this music when you are out in Cyprus then register for the newsletter !
History
Until 2005 there is little sign of any 'breakbeat' culture in Cyprus aside from guest appearances during the early 2000's of big UK artists of the time both from jungle and garage worlds such as Heartless Crew, MC Neat, Skibadee and Shabba.
2005 saw Axe with 'Island Crew', based around Kyrenia, promoting some big events as well as a residency at Zeja. Then during 2006 Newformz, Phat Finxxx and Seven7, together at Hermanos in Limassol, started dropping beats thus providing Cyprus with its first island wide Drum & Bass residencies.
Come 2007 Phat Finxxx and Deep Fried, under the moniker 'Limassoul', were hitting the NoBar, Limassol with the popular 'Soul Food' nights, providing ample portions of funk n bass. Summer 2007 saw the New Zealand Urban Notion crew as they hit Cyprus with appearances at Play, Ayia Napa and Bar127, Limassol, whilst Limassoul expanded with Mark-e joining to provide a touch of funky house to the 'Funk Files' evenings now in residency at Bar 127, Limassol.
Into 2009 Phat Finxxx took on a weekly online show with Blue Racoon and came runner up in the Energy FM DJ comp finals at Castle in Ayia Napa, later in the year the arrival of Oria and PumpALotOfThis to the scene playing alongside Phat Finxxx for Nexus @ Woodyz, Paphos, the Pleasuresound Festival during December and then Fresh @ 127, Limassol during the festive period.
2010. Ongoing small, rare private DnB parties outside of the summer, as well as frequent reggae/dub indoor & outdoor gatherings around the country during the summer. Additional exposure was given at one of the 'full moon' parties where a second 'alternative' stage was running all night. Perhaps the biggest change to recent years was the arrival of DEF:INITION & THIS IS UNDERGROUND promotors to Ayia Napa during the summer, providing weekly 'godfather' status DJ's from across the spectrum of 'broken beat' music.
2011. The 'Cyprus scene' is very very fragmented at best but who knows what 2011 will provide - you will read it here !
Get involved. Peace.
